Cancer treatment drugs aim to quickly destroy growing cells. Unfortunately, they also kill many healthy cells in the interim such as the cells in our hair follicles.

Generally, hair loss will transpire 2 to 3 weeks after the first course of chemotherapy. Some people lose their hair gradually, while other immediately start to lose their hair in large quantities.

We suggest cutting your hair as short as possible. We know cutting off any hair you still have or cutting your hair “early” can be hard to do and might make you feel like you’re losing your identity, but doing so, will help your wig fit better and feel more comfortable. We recommend saving some of your hair to help you find the right color when wig shopping.

Wigs, like many new things, can take some getting used to. If you have never worn a wig before, it may feel hot or itchy depending on what the base of the cap is made of. We suggest you buy a wig with a monofilament cap as they are often much lighter and more breathable. You can also wear a wig cap to keep Rest assured, the more you wear your wig, the more natural its fit will feel.

Everyone who has had chemotherapy or is without hair knows that a bald head cools off faster. You might feel cold at night, especially during the autumn and winter months. Consider wearing a super soft head covering in a breathable fabric to assist you at this time. You can find a great head covering by clicking here. These head coverings are also a great alternative to wearing a wig when it feels like too much of a hassle.

You’ll likely be wearing your wig all day, so, the fit should be snug but not enough to give you a headache. To measure your head, take a tape measure and begin at the front of your natural hairline and wrap the tape behind your ear to the nape of your neck around to your other ear until the tape meets again at the front of your hairline. Take note of where the tape measure meets up at the top of your forehead and reference the table below for your go-to cap size. If you find that even with the correct size, your wig still slips, use a wig grip (a stretchy headband worn underneath your wig) to help secure it in place. Most wigs will be held in place by small adjustable elastic straps that are inside of the wig. These can be tightened to make your wig fit snugly and securely. If this still isn't enough security for you, you can use double sided wig tape or invest in a wig grip. Wearing a wig cap will also help with slipping. Synthetic wigs are not meant to be exposed to any sort of direct heat. Keep your wig away from all your heat styling tools and be sure to be careful when using the oven. There are heat-friendly styles available to choose from but do not use high heat on them. Low heat is best on heat-friendly styles.

Hair will start to grow back once your treatments are completed. Some will experience immediate hair growth, and in other cases it might take a month or two.

Hair that grows back after chemotherapy often looks different to begin with. The color may be different, as well as the texture. Usually, this is just temporary and takes about 1 1/2 years for the hair to go back to its original style and texture.
