Alopecia Corner

Alopecia Areata is a common autoimmune disease that caused hair loss on the scalp, face, and sometimes other areas of the body. Hair loss is never easy, no matter the age or gender. While we are proud to offer products specifically for those with Alopecia Areata and other diseases that cause hair loss, we believe that curing the cause of medical hair loss is ultimately the best solution. That's why we partner with charities such as the National Alopecia Areata Foundation.

If you would like to donate & assist those with Alopecia Areata, use code NAAFNOW at checkout and we will donate 10% of your order value to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation.*

  • People of all ages, genders, and ethnic groups can develop alopecia areata. It often appears during childhood and can vary from person to person. About 6.8 million people in the U.S. alone have some form of alopecia.

  • Your body's own immune system attacks the healthy hair follicles causing them to become smaller and smaller. it drastically slows down the production of hair growth until hair growth stops completely.

  • With all forms of alopecia, your hair follicles stay alive and hair can regrow at any time. However, it is unpredictable and some people experience cycles of hair loss and hair growth.

  • There are several types of Alopecia. The three more well-known types of Alopecia are Alopecia Areata Patchy, Alopecia Totalis, and Alopecia Universalis. Alopecia areata patchy is the most common and those with it have one or more coin-sized hair loss patches on their scalp and/or other areas of the body. Alopecia Totalis is when there is a total loss of hair on the scalp and Alopecia Universalis is when there is a complete loss of hair on the scalp, face, and body.

  • The symptoms and level of hair loss can vary from person to person but there are some common symptoms to look out for.

    • Small round patches of hair loss on the scalp, chin, or other areas of the body
    • Hair loss and hair regrowth occurring simultaneously on different areas of the body
    • Hair loss that occurs mostly on one side of the scalp instead of both sides
    • Rows of small dents appearing on the fingernails
  • Unfortunately, there is currently no known cure for Alopecia. However, even when you are experiencing hair loss due to Alopecia your hair follicles remain intact. Therefore, your hair can regrow at any time.

  • While Alopecia does not cause rashes, redness, hives, or severe itching like other skin diseases some people find it helpful to protect the exposed skin. Depending on the type of Alopecia you have and the extent of hair loss, you can find a variety of treatments. However, these treatments do not work for everyone. It is always important to talk with your doctor to discuss the risks and benefits of different treatments.

If you or a loved one is going through hair loss and is looking to try wigs, then there are a few things that you should keep in mind when wig shopping. Ready to shop now? Scroll below to check out our hand-picked selection of hair loss-friendly wigs & accessories or visit our Hair Loss Wizards to shop based on the level & area of hair loss.

Before purchasing your first wig...

Cut your remaining hair (if any) as short as possible. We understand that this can be a difficult thing to do but it will help your wig fit better and feel more comfortable as a result.

Sizing is key to a good fit...

Ideally, your wig should be snug but not so tight that it gives you a headache. Measuring your head will help you find the right wig size. To measure, take a tape measure and start at the front of your natural hairline and wrap the tape behind your ears to the nape of your neck around to your other ear until the tape meets again at your hairline. Take note of your measurement and use the reference table below to find your size.

Size Head Circumference
Ultra Petite 20.5"
Petite 21"
Petite-Average 21.25"
Average 21.5" - 22.5"
Large 23"

For added security...

Most wigs will be held in place by small adjustable elastic straps that are inside of the wig. These can be tightened to make your wig fit snugly and securely. If this alone does not offer enough security, you can use double-sided wig tape or invest in a wig grip. Wearing a wig cap will also help with slipping. You can also look for wigs that have polyurethane strips that allow you to use adhesive without damaging the wig. There are also wigs that have silicone lining on the inside of the cap for an extra-secure grip without the use of adhesive.
